Understanding the Signs and Symptoms of a Heart Attack

Dr Jayanth Kesanasetty | 15 Feb 2026

A heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction, occurs when the blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked for a long enough time that part of the heart muscle is damaged or dies. This can happen if a plaque in a coronary artery breaks open and a blood clot forms, blocking the flow of blood to the heart. It is crucial to recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack, as prompt treatment can save lives. The most common symptom of a heart attack is chest pain or discomfort, which may feel like pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. This pain can radiate to the arms, neck, jaw, back, or stomach. Other symptoms may include shortness of breath, nausea, lightheadedness, or cold sweats. It's important to note that not everyone experiences the same symptoms, and some people may not have any symptoms at all. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of a heart attack, call emergency services immediately. Remember, time is of the essence when it comes to treating a heart attack. Taking action quickly can help minimize the damage to the heart muscle and improve the chances of survival. It's also essential to know the risk factors for heart disease and take steps to prevent a heart attack. This includes maintaining a healthy diet, staying physically active, managing stress, and avoiding smoking. By understanding the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and taking preventive measures, you can reduce your risk and protect your heart health.
